There are mornings when I just don't feel like gluten free toast with butter and jam, nor fried eggs on gluten free hasbrowns or even some gluten free muesli on yoghurt.... sometimes I just want a smoothie. Now, that's not in the "usual" morning smoothie sense. I mean, my Mum has green juices in the mornings and carrot juices and the like (she's a health nut - I like to say my mission is to feed her naughty gluten free treats!), but, it's just not me. I like my veggies with my lunch or dinner, or at the very least in an omelette! But.... if you DO want a fancy green-as-Jim-Carey's-Grinch-smoothie then be sure to check out this one!

As you can most probably guess, thismorning I wanted a

...licked up an extra spoonful of Nutella whilst I waited... and wah-lah! A delicious (and reasonably nutritous) gluten free chocolate hazelnut banana milkshake! I highly recommend that the next time you wake up at 10am on a weekend morning you do the same - as it's just a little bit naughty to be having chocolate in your breakfast (especially on a weekday!).
Gluten Free Scallywag Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Milkshake
Serves 1 thirsty gal or is enough for 2 little people
1/2 banana
2-3 decent spoonfuls of Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread
a few more spoonfuls of Nutella to eat whilst your pulsing the blender
1/3cup natural gluten free yoghurt (or a scoop of vanilla icecream)
200ml ice cold milk (any fat content you wish)
handful ice cubes
Throw everything in the blender. Pop the lid on. Pulse for a few moments (don't forget to eat the extra few spoonfuls of the Nutella at this point!).
Pour into a tall chilled glass. Slurp up through a couple of straws. Yummy!

Can't you just have the banana and the nutella? ;)
ReplyDeleteWith bananas at $15 a kilo at the moment, half a banana is all I could afford! It sounds lovely and rich though. Yummm...
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so so delicious, I just wish bananas weren't so expensive! Will have to try this when the prices are back to normal ;-)
ReplyDeleteThat smoothie sounds amazing! I think I'm the only person in the world who has never tried Nutella.
ReplyDeleteHi Jas,
ReplyDeleteI write you from Italy, since I discovered your wonderful blog I often visit it to look for some new gluten free receipes. Your milkshake looks delicious.
I would like to prepare your Gluten Free Honey & Spice Bundt Cake, but I don't know what the golden syrup is. With what could I substitute it?
Thanks. Brava!! Simo
@ Fi - you certainly can just have banana and nutella (I ate both separately whilst I was throwing this all in the blender!)
ReplyDelete@TIC - I found some for $9/kg at our local farmers markets and as I only eat a few fruits I'll grab a banana or two every now and then to mix things :)
@ Simo - Hello Italy! I've had a quick google for you and apparently you can find golden syrup at an ESSELUNGA or AUCHAN supermarket....? Golden Syrup is a lighter version or treacle or molasses, the Us call it light corn syrup. I'd try going half treacle or some such and then the remainder of the golden syrup in honey maybe? Buona fortuna!
Now why didn't I think of that??? :) I love to make peanut butter and banana smoothies, but the Nutella just makes it special! (I like the extra Nutella that you get to eat while making the smoothie, too). I know what I'm having for breakfast this Saturday.
