Chocolate Hazelnut & Banana Milkshake (EF)

Gluten Free Scallywag_Chocolate Hazelnut

There are mornings when I just don't feel like gluten free toast with butter and jam, nor fried eggs on gluten free hasbrowns or even some gluten free muesli on yoghurt ....

sometimes I just want a smoothie.

Now, that's not in the "usual" morning smoothie sense. I mean, my Mum has green juices in the mornings and carrot juices and the like (she's a health nut - I like to say my mission is to feed her naughty gluten free treats!), but, it's just not me. I like my veggies with my lunch or dinner, or at the very least in an omelette! But.... if you DO want a fancy green-as-Jim-Carey's-Grinch-smoothie then be sure to check out this one!

Hazelnut Banana

As you can most probably guess, this morning I wanted a smoothie milkshake. It was 10.30am. I hadn't had breakfast. In fact, I'd only woken up relatively recently. This whole 'searching for a new job thing' doesn't have a start time, so I'm making the most of sneaky mid week lay-ins whilst I can! To me, 10.30am is a perfectly acceptable time to have a milkshake. So, rounding up a few necessary ingredients from my (nearly completed - yay!) kitchen, I threw everything in the big glass jug, pressed the pulse button on the blender....

...licked up an extra spoonful of Nutella whilst I waited... and wah-lah! A delicious (and reasonably nutritious) gluten free chocolate hazelnut banana milkshake! I highly recommend that the next time you wake up at 10am on a weekend morning you do the same - as it's just a little bit naughty to be having chocolate in your breakfast (especially on a weekday!).

Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Milkshake

Serves 1 thirsty gal or is enough for 2 little people

1/2 banana, frozen works nicely but isn't necessary

2-3 decent spoonfuls of Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread

a few more spoonfuls of Nutella to eat as you are pulsing the blender

1/3cup natural or Greek gluten free yoghurt (or a scoop of vanilla icecream)

200ml ice cold milk (any fat content you wish)

handful of ice cubes

Throw everything into a high-powered-ice-crushing blender. Pop the lid on. Pulse for a few moments (don't forget to eat the extra few spoonfuls of the Nutella at this point!).

Pour into a tall chilled glass. Slurp up through a couple of thick straws. Yummy!

Notes + Substitutions:

  • Make me dairy free by subbing for dairy free yoghurt and milk alternatives such as coconut or almond.
  • Can't have nuts? Use chocolate sauce instead or throw in some finely chopped dark chocolate or use chocolate ice cream.
  • Hate banana? Sorry got nothing for you, this is after all a banana choc smoothie. Perhaps try this strawberry one

Lemon Lime & Bitters (Sometimes, you need a little drink...)

Gluten Free Scallywag_LLB 1

... because you've had a bad day at work (or a really fabulous one), so you come home.......pour some vodka (amount depends on exactly how bad or fabulous your day was) onto some ice, add some lime juice, a splash of bitters + lemonade

and wa-lah! Lemon Lime & Bitters (with vodka) perfect for cooling down after a (very) average day at work.

Strawberry Zing Smoothie

It's heating up here, in Perth. We are wearing shorts around the place. The winter legs are out to start their summer glow. Gym visits are more regular, laundry dries quickly on the line. There are new herbs in our little balcony garden; basil, mint, thyme and parsley. I sneezed a dozen times planting them, hay fever - eek!

There are also strawberries abound in our fridge. My man made a smoothie - all strawberry, citrus and gingery goodness. It isn't my thing strawberries and citrus, but I'm nice and like to share. (Plus he said it was yummy!) So, here's the recipe for you to start your week with - Happy Monday!

Strawberry Zing Smoothie

Serves two strawberry lovers, or four mini strawberry lovers :)

2 cups fresh strawberries, greens removed, washed

3 small pieces of crystalised ginger

1 large slurp (about 1/3 cup) orange juice

4 ice blocks, add more for a thicker smoothie

Add all ingredients into blender. Pulse until smooth. Pour into glass and drink!
