Caramel Walnut Slice

Gluten Free Scallywag Walnut Slice

Have you been to the Camberwell Sunday Markets? Do you like sorting through trash to find treasure or love collecting vintage nick-knacks? Yes? Well, don't go to the Camberwell Sunday Markets then, you'll get addicted! Ha! One of the ladies I met at a workshop that I did with Dario earlier in the year is addicted (like me), sometimes we'll text each other our finds and sometimes we'll go shopping together; make a day of it. You know, talk each other in and out of purchases, carry ridiculously heavy bags when the others fingers are purple and about to fall off- it's just what friends do - take everything home and re examine it all over a coffee and then pour over the cookbook collection to get in the kitchen again! It's a vicious, vicious cycle and one that my gorgeous fiance finds hilarious, so long as everything I buy fits in my tiny prop cupboard (which isn't much!) but somehow I always manage to find something else and it always fits...

This market is one of my favourite things about Melbourne . That and the awesome industrial/vintage coffee shops, Chapel St Bazaar (like Camberwell Markets but open all week - it's a dangerous spot!), walking round the tan on sunny mornings, turning corners to find hidden bars with friends and drinking too much good wine when out to dinner!

One of the other things I've thoroughly enjoyed here in Melbourne are the expos and shows and I can't wait to help out Three Ducks Gourmet with their stall on the 15th September! I'm helping out Three Ducks with the powerwoman behind One Girl Pie who makes amazing gluten free pies that are stocked at Three Ducks and eaten by me on the odd occasion I want a wee bit o' blueberry pie! So, if you're gluten free and in Melbourne on the 15th September 2012 then head along to the Vic + Tas Gluten Free Expo from 9.30am to 4pm at the Caulfield Racecourse hosted by the folks from the Vic + Tas Coeliac Society. Avocado & Mint Toasts for Brunch & A Hamper Giveaway!

Gluten Free Scallywag - Avocado + Mint Toasts

Don't you just love the weekends? Those two days between Friday and Monday where

the evenings are ours to do as we wish,

the afternoons ripe for (possibly boozy - but I'll deny it all) lunches with your girlfriends and lazy mornings sleeping in in your big bed all by your self whilst your fiance is out riding his bike. Yep, that was my weekend this weekend, although, I must say my gorgeous man did make me dinner last night, pick me up after the deny-it-all-boozy-lunch (that may have extended on into the evening in a not-so-boozy-manner - thank goodness - as I feel I can't handle many of those these days!) then we walked down to the Prahran Markets with me on Sunday morning for some fresh fruit at veg.

Oh! Which reminds me - did you know there's a new gluten free store there at the Prahran Markets? Yep, there is and it's packed full of gluten free goodies, so you should check it out whilst you're buying your gluten free snags from the butchers next weekend...

Gluten Free Scallywag - Avocado + Mint Toasts

After a long day on Saturday all I wanted on my return from the markets was something tasty for brunch. I've been

slowly getting my man to eat avocado

. He knows that avocados are rich in vitamin C, high in fibre and folate and contain natural antioxidants such as Vitamin E. Yep, he knows they're pretty fab, but he's never liked the flavour and wasn't to fussed on the texture either, so, I took some inspiration from a recent breakfast out and made this brunch for him combining the avocado with a few of his favourite things - mint, lemon and feta. Smash it onto some crispy toast (more on that below), top with a fried egg and ta-da fiance friendly avocado! Highly recommended.

Congratulations to:

Margaret Jasinska - This Christmas I'm looking forward to making a pavlova topped with lots of cream, nectarines, blueberries and passionfruit. So nice because it's already gluten free and lovely and cool on a hot summer day.

Ellie Rose -  This year i am looking forward to baking mince pie bomb Alaska's: a gluten free mince pie topped with homemade coconut milk ice cream and baked in a meringue shell, literally heaven on a plate!

Now, onto my announcement - serious happy dances happening here people!

Last week my man surprised me with a lovely bottle of champagne to celebrate, because, you see, my kitchen, recipes and business plan has been approved by my local council to be able to bake my gluten free goods for you to gobble up. Yes - that's right everyone!

The Gluten Free Scallywag Bakery  is now open for business!

It's taken me a while (as those select friends that knew about my plans would know!) but it's here and I can't wait to be able to help those of you in Perth, Western Australia, with your gluten free celebrations! You'll see a new page at the top of this site which has information about the Gluten Free Scallywag Bakery; what's available - gluten free cakes, cookies and slices are on the menu, plus important information about my kitchen and where these gluten free goodies are available!!

So, if you have a friend that's gluten free and you need some gluten free cupcakes or cookies for them or you are gluten free and simply aren't in the mood to bake that next morning tea for work then, please, check out The Gluten Free Scallywag Bakery and contact me about an order of scrumptious gluten free cakes, brownies or cookies!

After all this excitement (and more than a few happy dances and a bottle of bubbly) I haven't had a chance to complete my usual recipe post for you, so I'll leave you with one of my favourite gluten free salads from this time last year - Gluten & Lactose Free Creamy Mustard Chicken Salad.
